Good maintenance planning starts while the detail is still on the drawing. A discreet step light needs a clear route for cleaning, inspection and eventual replacement, even when most of its body is hidden in the wall.

Plan the access

Confirm how the face is removed and where the connection or driver can be reached. Keep the manufacturer’s required clearances in the section. Avoid allowing a later layer of plaster, stone or joinery to close the intended service route.

Ask whether the light source or driver is replaceable for the exact model. Where the complete fitting is replaced, record the opening and mounting arrangement so a future team can evaluate a substitute.

Keep the product record together

A room number and a product photograph are helpful; a complete model reference is better. Build a small handover record containing:

  • Model, control variant and installation location.
  • Finish, CCT and approved sample reference.
  • Current drawing and installation instructions.
  • Supplier contact and order reference.
  • Care guidance and any replacement information provided.

Review cleaning and replacement

Request the recommended cleaning method and materials for the finish. Do not assume that every coating tolerates the same detergent or abrasive cloth. Electrical access and replacement should follow the product instructions and be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel.

For larger or phased projects, discuss spare units while the selected variant is available. Keep any spares labelled against the same schedule used for the approved sample and repeat order.
